The content under this theme shows practice having most impact in improving outcomes for disadvantaged pupils, whilst ensuring that other groups continue to be stretched and achieve at least expected progress. This includes pupils eligible for pupil premium (PP), children looked after (CLA), those with special educational needs (SEN), black and minority ethnic (BME) pupils and pupils with English as an additional language (EAL). It also includes case studies about transition from/to different phases of education.

Closing gaps - project

The first project within the Exchanging Excellence® programme was called “Closing Gaps”, a cross phase project to find practice that is having most impact in improving outcomes for pupils eligible for the pupil premium. The project is currently in phase 2.

Phase 1 took place in the spring and summer terms of 2014 and involved HfL consultants working with the Teaching Alliances, other school leaders, HfL staff and the Virtual School for Children Looked After, identifying practice across the county where there is evidence of most impact. The main research findings and recommendations from this first phase were collated into a report 'Pupil Premium in Hertfordshire: Use and Impact'

In Phase 2 of the project schools interested in developing work on this important theme and contributing to the bank of research evidence were invited to apply for additional Exchanging Excellence® funding and support.

Full details of the project and the report can be found here
