Open children’s eyes to the real possibilities of science

It is important that children see the relevance of science and develop the skills to work scientifically. The sessions within this year’s conference will explore:

  • Using science as a context to develop skills for English and maths
  • Encouraging independence in working scientifically
  • Strategies to engage and excite children in real-life science

Delegate will also have the opportunity to share good practice, visit the exhibitions and gain an understanding of important updates in primary science.

Key note speaker David Allen

David Allen worked in primary schools for over twenty years as a teacher, senior leader and Deputy Head teacher. He is currently a Senior Leader in Education at The University of Hertfordshire. He is the Programme Leader for the Bachelor of Education and also leads science and art. David is an active member of the ASE Primary Committee, Primary Science Editorial Board and Primary Science Quality Mark leadership team.

The session will explore a recent research project that has enabled a deeper understanding of how the use of drama can support the development of science understanding and inquiry in the primary classroom. This work is based on my own experiences as a primary teacher where I developed scientifically precise drama scripts with classes of Key Stage 2 children to consolidate the science learning gained from a given topic. These sessions both inspired and encouraged the children to develop their scientific understanding and further developed the children’s enthusiasm for science whilst maintaining mutually beneficial cross-curricula links with English.
