The Hertfordshire ICT scheme, written by the Hertfordshire Primary ICT Advisers, offers a creative framework for teaching and assessing discrete ICT in the primary phase. It is designed to be personalised by schools, feeding into their own planning format. The scheme, which prepares children for a technology-rich future, embraces new technologies while embedding the safe and responsible use of ICT.
It provides a flexible and manageable approach to planning and assessment of ICT in school. The scheme is regularly updated to ensure it is in line with the latest thinking from government and national sources. Version 2 includes a revised EYFS section, mapped to the 2012 Development Matters for Early Years. This version also emphasises and extends the programming and computing science element, which is key to the teaching of ICT in the primary phase.
As of February 2013, already 66% of Hertfordshire Primary schools has purchased the scheme, and we have also received a significant number of enquiries from schools outside Hertfordshire, including one from Dubai!
Cunningham Hill Junior, which adopted the scheme in September 2011, had a very successful Ofsted inspection. The report included this comment:
In an outstanding lesson in information and communication technology (ICT), pupils were able to reach exceptionally high levels of attainment and develop their skills extremely well. This was because the teacher’s subject knowledge was thorough and secure. Pupils made their own animations and then busily set to work making their ‘voice overs’. The end product was excellent and, as a result, pupils broke into spontaneous applause."
The cost of the scheme is £289 (£293 from 1st April 2013) ex VAT (travel expenses may apply for schools outside Hertfordshire). This cost includes a 3-hour guided session, supporting the roll-out of the scheme in the school. In addition, subscribing schools benefit from termly updates and/or resources to support their use of the scheme.
