Helen is the Education Services Director for disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils and she has over 30 years experience in education. The core purpose of her role is to challenge and support mainstream and special schools to raise standards for pupils who are supported by the pupil premium, those who are looked after by the Local Authority, those who have special educational needs and/or disabilities, those who speak English as an additional language or who are from minority ethnic groups, those with mental health needs, those at risk of cyber-exploitation and pupils from any other groups who need support to reach their potential. Helen leads the Herts for Learning team with responsibility for the work around raising standards for vulnerable pupils.
Helen works with a range of external partners including Hertfordshire County Council and the Eastern Partnership.
She has been a successful headteacher with experience of working in middle and primary schools, particularly those in challenging areas. She is passionate about improving outcomes for pupils who are vulnerable in their learning. She is the improvement partner to the Hertfordshire Virtual School for children looked after.
Helen's work supports school improvement in Hertfordshire and beyond and this includes leadership team development and securing good and better teaching. She is skilled in headteacher performance management and successfully supports schools to validate their self-evaluation. She frequently supports with leadership appointments. She strikes a successful balance of monitoring, challenge, support and intervention, depending upon the needs of the individual school.
Helen is a trained lead Ofsted inspector and is accredited to inspect specialist SEN resource provision and independent special schools as well as SEN provision in mainstream schools and academies. She is also accredited to inspect independent schools. Helen carries out Ofsted training for Chairs of governors, governing bodies and clerks to governors as well as training Hertfordshire leaders of governance to deliver key pieces of training themselves.
