Equalities Duties

The Equality Act 2010 offers individuals protection against all forms of discrimination. Schools, like all other public organisations, are obliged to eliminate unlawful discrimination, victimisation, harassment; advance equal opportunity; and foster good relations.

BME achievement support includes:

  • Equality and diversity review
The half/full‑day review aims at helping schools to embed equality practice and prepare learners for life in modern Britain.
  • English as an additional language (EAL)
EAL learners are often prevented from achieving their full learning potential by language barriers. Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) can limit access to learning. Herts for learning’s BME team supports schools in meeting the needs of EAL learners, and in the development of beginner and more advanced bilingual learners.
