    A self-review evaluation tool enabling you to review how you meet the statutory requirements of the EYFS in your setting, to ensure you are compliant in all areas. Questions support your reflective practice and guide you to consider further actions and enhancements to improve the quality of your provision.     Self-evaluation is a vital part of Early Years practice and needs to be a continuous process to support quality improvement. To support this process you can submit your completed self-evaluation document for review and comment. Experienced EYCs will provide constructive telephone feedback informed by EYFS and Ofsted requirements.

    It is part of the EYFS statutory and Ofsted requirements to be able to look, listen and note what children can do to inform planning that promotes progress in a child’s learning and development. Effective recording of observations enables accurate assessment judgements.

    All staff should be able to write good‑quality observations. This visit can provide tailored support for individuals or groups of staff that will help and guide them to successfully write observations of children to inform good assessment practice.

    As a leader or manager, it is important that you are able to monitor the quality of your teams’ assessment evidence in learning journals. This visit will help you to review your setting’s learning journals whether they are paper‑based or electronic.

    One of our EYCs will help you to identify strengths and areas for development. They will guide you to highlight any gaps in the observational assessment and support you to plan ways to improve quality and consistency across your staff team in their observational assessment practice.

    You will work with a highly experienced EYC who will your setting. Over three hours, the EYC will provide a detailed review of a sample of children’s learning journals, including for those identified as vulnerable and disadvantaged.

    The EYC will initially work alongside the leader or manager, or key staff identified for support. Discussions will include progress of children, how observations inform planning and how learning journal information informs periodic assessment judgments.

    It is important that practitioners discuss what they knowabout children by using the assessment evidence that is gathered and moderating the judgements made about each child’s stage of development. When practitioners successfully undertake moderation, it results in accurate assessment judgments for children’s learning and development.

    A guided moderation session will help practitioners evaluate evidence and agree accurate assessment judgements about children. When assessment judgements are robust and accurate adults can better plan to meet children’s learning and development needs so that they make good progress.

    You will work with a highly experienced EYC who will visit your setting for three hours to work with you and your staff to complete a moderation activity. This activity will focus on a sample of children’s assessment information. The visit will focus discussion with the manager and key person(s) on the assessment judgments made about children who are selected for moderation activity.

    A professional development opportunity for practitioners to learn on the job.

    During the visit, the EYC will model effective teaching strategies that engage children in learning and promote high‑quality interactions. This is a great way to provide practitioners with professional development training in‑house where they can observe, learn and put into practice whilst working with the children and receiving support from an experienced EYC.

    You will work with a highly experienced EYC who will agree the main area of focus for the session and the member(s) of staff that will be involved. The EYC will spend two and a half hours in the setting. A brief summary of visit will be provided after the session to ensure the manager has a record of the top teaching tips and key messages for strengthening practice.

    A bespoke service to meet your needs, using information that is personalised to your setting, supporting you to ‘get the most out of your data’. The support from an EYC will empower your team to understand assessment data for groups of children and individuals.

    This can be used to evaluate children’s attainment and progress so that information is used effectively to inform planning and any necessary adaptations to provision. This service will help you to review your setting’s attainment and progress data that you collect each term.

    • Receive a data assessment summary tool and return this completed to your allocated EYC. They will review this in preparation for a 30-minute telephone conversation to support your analysis of your data.


    • Option one can be enhanced with a summarised written report of the conversation, recording findings and recommendations to share with your team in your setting.

    • A further option can be to arrange for the EYC to visit your setting after you have returned your assessment data. This will enable joint analysis of your data in your setting. This two-hour visit will support you in understanding how to interrogate your assessment data to ensure it is being used as effectively as possible to inform improvements in practice and outcomes for children.

    All leaders and managers should be able to clearly articulate the strengths and areas for development in their setting through a thorough self-evaluation process. This visit will ensure that a highly experienced Early Years Consultant works with you to evaluate your setting’s practice and provision.

    Providers must take every action possible to ensure children are kept safe in their care. This visit will check for statutory compliance with the Early Years Foundation Stage. It includes a review of premises, practitioner safeguarding knowledge and safer recruitment practices. A full report will detail the findings and identify any recommendations to strengthen practice.

    You will work with a highly experienced EYC who will visit your setting for three hours to evaluate the effectiveness of safeguarding practices. The EYC will focus on safe staffing including Single Central Record (SCR) and recruitment processes, staff records and qualifications, policies, risk assessments, and records for Child Protection concerns/accidents/ incidents. The visit will include a site walk, observation of the areas the children access and brief discussions with staff. After the visit, the EYC will complete a report of the findings on the day and this will be sent to you, highlighting strengths and any recommendations for developing good practice in safeguarding.

    Regular monitoring is an essential part of a leader’s role. This visit enables you to work with one of our EYCs to jointly observe, discuss and gain a shared understanding of strengths and areas for development seen during the monitoring activity. ‘Learning Walks’ is a monitoring tool that can be tightly focused on particular aspects of provision and practice.

    This could be an area of learning, aspect of provision, displays, or a selected element of teaching and learning. Prior to the visit, you will agree the focus for the monitoring activity with the EYC. During the three‑hour visit, the EYC will work alongside the manager discussing their observations.

    There is no report included as it is expected that you will take notes during the visit.
