Essential foundations for counting
Develop a better understanding of key mathematical learning throughout Nursery and beyond with Essential Foundations for Counting.
Our Primary maths and EYFS experts have created an updated set of booklets that support the development of children’s foundations for counting.
The booklets are available as a resource included in our on-demand online training course ‘Essential Foundations for Counting’. The online course will help you use the booklets to develop key conceptual understanding in the crucial early mathematical learning across provision. You can access the course at a convenient time and play, pause and rewind if necessary. Take a look at a preview of the online course below.
The training will help all adults within a setting to:
- have a better understanding of key mathematical learning throughout Nursery and beyond as a transitional tool for early Reception learning
- learn what the essential foundations for counting are, why they are so important and the progression through them.
The booklets help to exemplify the role of the adult within this development, providing models of conversations that could take place when interacting with the children, drawing on play to help to develop and deepen the children’s understanding of these essential foundations for counting. Each booklet focuses on a key skill:
- group recognition or subitising.
The four training videos can be watched in any order but whilst watching them viewers will be asked to pause them and engage in various activities on a learning log for each video. In addition to the four videos introducing the booklets, there is a short video about the principles of counting and a document that explains how to play some subitising games. These are intended as a powerful tool for the professional development of the team.
Take a look around the online course and watch some previews of the videos included.
