Progression in mental mathematics
This document supports teachers and leaders with a map of progression in mental fluency. The National Curriculum (2014) programme of study includes references to mental calculation but lacks the detail needed to provide a coherent pathway. This guidance document provides the necessary detail.
With the expectation that pupils will move at ‘broadly the same pace’ through the curriculum, schools have been seeking a pathway from EYFS to Year 6 that will support the development of all pupils’ mental skills. This document reflects the findings of our research projects and ‘tried and tested’ approaches with schools, focusing on practice that is most effective at increasing mental fluency for more of our pupils.
