Working scientifically assessment tasks

Nine working scientifically tasks designed to fit within the teaching sequences of each of the KS1 topics. The tasks provide a specific opportunity to develop and assess a range of working scientifically skills. The engaging tasks encourage children to think about the scientific process, make decisions in enquiries and, where possible, explore their own questions. All tasks have been designed to be easy to resource and include:

  • key questions to challenge and extend scientific thinking
  • advice on differentiation with  ideas for support and challenge
  • guidance and subject knowledge notes where necessary to ensure teacher confidence

Working scientifically tracking sheets and wheels

Constructed from the National Curriculum to show breadth and progression in key scientific skills, these sheets cover the full range of skills children need to cover in KS1 to become great scientists. They are supported by working scientifically wheels which summarise the key skills. These can be used to support children with understanding the skills they use and develop in science lessons. Guidance is provided to support teachers with using the tracking sheets and wheels to make accurate judgements about attainment.
