A structured 10-week programme of fully resourced CPD that provides teachers with the tools and knowledge to identify and address the most significant gaps in spelling learning.

Spelling has received a great deal of attention over the past few years. Changes to assessment practices, developments in our understanding of how best to support children’s learning, and our growing understanding of literacy development have led many practitioners to consider the quality and effectiveness of this aspect of the English curriculum.

This reflection has been further fuelled by the significant disruption to the curriculum over the past 12 months. Given the scale of statutory spelling requirements, this is an aspect of writing especially vulnerable to the effects of disrupted learning.  Addressing these gaps requires strong subject knowledge and equally strong teaching approaches.

The Herts for Learning Spelling SOS KS2 is a comprehensive programme of fully resourced CPD that provides teachers with the tools and knowledge to identify and address the most significant gaps in learning.

    Programme focus

    • improving the standards in spelling for a group of target pupils
    • enabling pupils to have a more positive relationship with spelling
    • developing strategies to support pupils to access and apply their learning in their long-term memory, and accessing and applying this learning in independent writing
    • developing teachers’ subject knowledge in order for them to be able to identify pupils’ misconceptions accurately, and prioritise key learning areas for individuals
    • implementing and managing a whole class teaching sequence that meets the varying needs of individuals.

    Participate in this programme

The full programme takes place across the spring term and consists of a series of four webinars (one pre-recorded and three live sessions) as well as diagnostic tests, plans and resources.

Up to four KS2 teachers will be provided with access to the webinars and associated materials.  As such the programme may be used to support the development of spelling teaching and learning across Years 3 to 6.

    Impact and outcomes

The Spelling SOS KS2 programme has been designed to have a swift and powerful impact on pupils’ spelling achievement in a short period. Following successful implementation of the programme, targeted pupils will be on an improved trajectory towards EXS in writing at the end of KS2; have a more positive relationship with spelling; be more enthusiastic, confident spellers with an increased understanding and language comprehension.

As part of the programme, participating teachers are asked to work with a group of four pupils for ten minutes each per week (four sessions of 10 minutes) for an eight-week period. Teachers will have an increased understanding of the different routes children take into spelling. Subject knowledge will be developed, and this will enable teachers to identify misconceptions accurately, and prioritise key learning areas to focus on for individuals.

    Programme delivery

Participants will receive the programme CPD through a pre-recorded introductory session, a launch webinar, a mid-programme twilight webinar and a final, ‘celebratory’ webinar. Each session will have a duration of 1.5 hours with the exception of the launch webinar, which has a duration of 2 hours.

Miscue analysis and diagnostic assessment tools are used to support identification of focus children and the associated gaps in their learning. This information is used to prioritise key learning areas for individuals. Teachers will be supported to develop confidence in the use of these tools, which will further enhance the strength of teaching in relation to spelling.

Each school is allocated a programme adviser. The adviser will be on hand throughout the programme period to answer queries as needed. The adviser will support you to analyse your data to consider next steps for the children and for the school.
