The current SEND Code of Practice places high importance on schools developing an outcomes‑focused approach to working with children and young people with SEND. At its heart is the importance of great teaching, linked to developing a collaborative, participative culture, using person‑centred approaches.

    Our SEND advisers work with schools and academies to ensure the code is embedded into practice, and that outcomes and progress for pupils with SEND improve.

    SEND support includes:

    • SEND check-up – a half-day school review of SEND systems, policy and practice
      The SEND check-up is a light-touch review, which explores the principles in the code of practice and considers how they are reflected through the school systems, policies and practice.

    SENCOs in Hertfordshire schools and settings are able to access a unique range of training opportunities available across the region via the Eastern Partnership UK (SEND), which is brought to schools and academies by Herts for Learning.

    aptGO logoaptGO full-day facilitated audit and action planning for SEND

    To support schools and academies with their development planning, we offer a deep self-evaluation of SEND practice through aptGO, an innovative audit and planning school improvement tool, focusing on SEND. On completion of the audit, schools and academies will have a clear picture of their current practice, explored in detail through the Ofsted framework; and the option of a full report, summarising baseline judgement and the next steps for each area.

    SEN Masters Suite

    SENCOs in Hertfordshire schools and settings are able to access a unique range of training opportunities available across the region via the Eastern Partnership UK (SEND), which is brought to schools and academies by Herts for Learning.

    These can be accessed individually or combined to create a Masters in Educational Leadership or a Masters in Send and Inclusion.

    SEN masters

    The range of programmes available includes:

    National Award for SEN Coordination: A mandatory qualification for all SENCOs new to role since 2009. Successful completion of the programme ensures SENCOs have the nationally recognised qualification and a high level of knowledge and skill, as required to lead the development of policy and practice for SEND in schools and settings.

    Advanced SENCO Award: Further develops the knowledge and skills gained in the National Award. Can also be accessed by more experienced SENCOs who have been in post prior to 2009.

    SENCOs as Leaders Award: Provides SENCOs with the extensive knowledge and skills needed to provide leadership for SEN within schools and across schools.

    Programmes are run each year in Hertfordshire, based on demand from SENCOs.
