Our mathematics advisers are innovative, highly skilled classroom practitioners and leaders who work with schools and academies to build a bespoke package of support. Advisers have a wealth of school improvement experience and can support mainstream, independent and special schools’ leaders and teachers to develop excellent mathematics teaching and learning.

We have a proven track record of working effectively to develop approaches that ensure that schools and academies remain at the forefront of outstanding practice.

Packages of support focus upon building the capacity of maths subject leaders and are designed to meet specific needs. Examples of recent school focuses include:

    • mastery approaches to teaching and learning
    • developing concrete-pictorial-abstract representations
    • stretching all learners through effective challenge
    • enhancing mental fluency
    • securing age-related expectations
    • creating problem-solving and reasoning-rich classrooms
    • addressing misconceptions and gaps to accelerate learning

We look forward to designing the right package to develop excellent mathematics teaching and learning with individual schools and academies.

    Training and conferences

Our advisers deliver central training, regularly present at national and regional conferences and have contributed articles and to a range of educational publications. The mathematics team also enjoy hosting conferences, attracting high-calibre speakers such as Professor Jo Boaler and Jane Jones, Ofsted’s National Lead for mathematics.

    Resources

The team have also produced a wide range of detailed mathematics resources that align with National Curriculum 2014 expectations, including detailed planning, assessment and exemplification materials as part of the PA Plus subscription package.

We have also designed an easy to pick up and use set of sequences with step by step guidance covering the entire mathematics curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6.  Designed to support teachers, the planning includes examples of how concrete and pictorial representations can benefit pupils’ learning as well as other mastery techniques. The ESSENTIALmaths planning tool has a wealth of ideas to deepen and extend mathematical thinking for all learners.

The maths team has provided excellent professional development as always. They clearly explain, articulate, model effectively so that our teachers learn new skills. They know us really well and have been instrumental in helping us achieve outstanding progress in our end of key stage results.

“...progress was significantly above average, and in the top 10% nationally, in reading, writing and mathematics” (Ofsted report, March 2017).
