ESSENTIALmaths Planning

ESSENTIALmaths learning sequences enable teachers to teach a carefully planned, small-step progression through the maths national curriculum from Reception to Year 6.

The Year 5 planning materials include:

  • 40 learning sequences with clear teaching guidance for each small step
  • Destination questions (with answers and response guidance) for each sequence
  • Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach modelling and guidance
  • Key questions
  • ‘Pupil talk’ sentence and vocabulary exemplification
  • Handouts for modelling and independent practice
  • Opportunities for working at greater depth
  • Games designed to rehearse key learning

ESSENTIALmaths Diagnostic Assessments

The termly diagnostic tests in arithmetic and reasoning are designed to identify strengths of the class, where fundamental learning has not fully been secured or where common errors or misconceptions need addressing.

The electronic markbook that accompanies each test produces forensic diagnostic profiles for individual pupils, groups, or whole classes.

The termly planning guides, coupled with the multiple-choice format, informs planning for the next term or academic year, considering ‘Why this? Why now?’
